A Pretty Lady and I attended Fall for Dance, a dance festival taking place at the New York City Center. A friend of hers was in the festival and had two comp. tickets. This festival is very popular and the tickets sell out quickly, so we jumped at the opportunity to attend.
The shows vary by day, and the day we attended happened to have 2 ballet companies and 2 modern companies doing a few pieces each. For me, the two ballet companies were dreadful, especially the piece where one single male performer did ballet to various pieces of music that was being performed live (I think he was famous, because he sure acted like a prick). The musician was great and was the only thing I focused on. The ballet guy kept trying to be funny by doing what I’d describe as “letting loose”, I just found it tacky. All the modern pieces were so much better, and I’m not just saying it because A Pretty Lady introduced me to it (well maybe I am a little).
Here’s my definition of the difference between ballet and modern. Modern dance is exactly like Ballet, except you remove the pompous attitude and oh-look-at-me self importance, then remove the stick from all the dancer’s buttocks. To my virgin dance eyes, Ballet represents “The Man”, thus I dislike it. Don’t get me wrong, ballet looks extremely hard to do, physically, it’s just not my style. And to be fair, I have seen a few Modern pieces that were dreadful as well.
